In the U.K. the leading children's welfare organization is the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children. Last month they released a study into childhood abuse and neglect over the past 30 years (http://nspcc.org.uk/research). The title is misleading because it compares a survey of young adults who were children 30 years ago with an equivalent study just ten years later. I've reproduced the results from the survey's Table1 below.

1998/99 __________ 2009

14.5% -- down to --> 06.0% - Regular verbal abuse
10.0% -- down to --> 02.8% - Regular physical punishment
06.8% -- down to --> 05.0% - Forced sexual acts (most often by other teenage children)
05.7% -- down to --> 01.8% - Regular physical abuse

Respondents were interviewed using computer-assisted self-interview techniques. Results from 3,000 18-24 year olds interviewed in 1998-1999 were compared with 1,761 18-24 year olds interviewed in 2009. Data for "Regular physical punishment" excludes rare or infrequent spankings.
