In today's The Guardian, Children's commissioner Maggie Atkinson said: "Pets have more legal protection than children, whose parents should be banned from smacking them." And "... it was her personal view that the law gives pets and adults more rights to be protected from violence than children, and she would like to see a total ban, with parents facing criminal action for corporal punishment."

You may want to avoid the flood of negative comments there that seem to spew what we have already discussed in these past years.

I am not hopeful of a breakthrough. This issue has been raised again and again over the past two decades. The "Children Are Unbeatable Alliance" has the support of hundreds of prominent members of society, in all walks of life (www.childrenareunbeatable.org.uk/pages/supporters.html), and Children's Commissioner Maggie Atkinson has raised the issue more than once since she was appointed to her official position. I think there is a better chance that China will ban corporal punishment by parents before it happens in the UK! Here is the latest news from China....

In December, 2013, UNICEF in China teamed up with the Communist Party's "All China Women's Federation" to launch a public education campaign against corporal punishment by parents:

PS. Three of Alice Miller's books have been published in Chinese.
