Michael Pickens, son of billionaire business magnate T. Boone Pickens, began a tell-all blog last October, writing about petty fighting, poor parenting, and nasty behavior within the Pickens family, as well as his own drug abuse and depression....

Of course, there are counter-claims by the rest of his family....

Forget the reader comments after the Forbes article which say that when a son becomes a depressive drug addict it has nothing to do with how he was raised by his parents. There are always going to be people who say there can be smoke without fire. You just have to wait for those no-hopers to die off. There'll be fewer of them in the next generation.

Hi searching,
Yes, anyone who goes public like this needs to have the strength to stand negative reactions. But I think the amount of negativity depends on the cultural climate in the country where they publicize their childhood history. The 'blame the victim' reaction is more frequent in the American Bible Belt than anywhere else.

Alice Miller was familiar with the cultural climate and literature in Germany, but she didn't have first-hand experience of the American cultural climate, so she only mentioned examples of punishments in schools. What she didn't mention was the child rearing manual written by American psychologist J.B.Watson - "The Psychological Care of Infant and Child" - first published in 1928. It quickly became a best-seller and remained influential for at least two decades. It was equally poisonous as Dr. Schreber's Schwarze P├Ądagogik. There is plenty of information about it on the internet. One of J.B.Watson's sons committed suicide.

It's easy to forget, also, that while American forces were advancing through Europe during WWII, racial segregation was in force in the United States.... black children were not allowed to attend the same schools as white children.
