Frankly, I'm not surprised. When the pope was small, it was common practice to beat boys with a belt in the family or in Catholic schools at the first sign of disobedience. The pope represents everything that is against spontaneity, joy, sex, anger and freedom. When you repress that, it comes out in the most bizarre outbursts. Don't get it that still millions of people look up to the pope as some kind of wise man.

I'm going to put this news on the front page of the site (For those who haven't noticed it yet; the front page is a blog now: www.wallsofsilence.com)

Aye, gosh and Begorrah, and a fine blog it is, too! Except for maybe those wee comments down there under that video about that total jerk asshole kicking that dog inside the elevator (the first one)--which look maybe like the kind of gobblety-gook that might be associated somehow with some kind of Chinese porn site. (The comments look that way, I mean, not really the video so much.) But other than that...!

Oh, I reminded myself of My Encounter With the Irish Priest. The guy told me my new pet bumblebee that I'd just caught in a jar was sending radio signals with his antennae (which really were wiggling pretty extra fast, I thought) to his friends so they'd come rescue him. And (aside from the fact that Everybody Knows Priests Don't Lie) he said it with such a big, fine and friendly Irish smile that I didn't see how I could not believe him. I looked at my father (my real one, who smiled too), immediately let the stupid bee go and ran into the house, shivers going up and down my spine. (This is one big honking bee I'm talking about!)

Far as el Papa:
I thought about it some today, wondering seriously what kind of stuff a holy father with what I suppose would be a "safe" or at least ultra-controlled life could possibly need to "teach himself a lesson" about that way, especially on such a regular basis. I ended up figuring it must have just been horniness. Who knows, really, but except for Augustine who got famous (and his sainthood, I think) for (after sending his concubine and their son away in tears) triumphantly doing his Miracle of Never Feeling Horny Anymore, Not Even a Eensy Bit, it seems like horniness has lingered to some extent for a lot of other professionals in the biz. So, "reason" and even fervent prayer having failed him, it would only just make "sense" to break out The Terminator. Which obviously failed to terminate, at least for long. Anyway it's just a theory. Poor us, though, you know? Poor human race. It's like you're going along minding your own business, things are riding somewhere between "oh, not bad, thanks" and "actually pretty good" and then you wake up one day to discover the entire world is and everyone in it is totally 100% crazier than batshit.

And then two hours after I posted it struck me: another possibility is that sex was in fact involved but that eliminating the urge for it may not have exactly been the point. So I'm slow. At least I managed to get there.

You're right: probably nobody really knows "why" he did it and without being able to investigate anything concrete or tangible it's at least mostly a waste of time to engage in what almost by definition is 'meaningless' conjecture. But I can't think of any living thing other than human beings that ever come close to behaving that way and I think suggestions that self-punishment and torture should be revered are insane.
