Today I read the following in our newspaper:

Wellington - Hundreds of protesters in New Zealand's capital Wellington demanded yesterday that a proposed law against child spanking should be stopped.

About 500 people, some of them with prams, rallied towards the parliament building. They were holding plates with texts like 'Keep your hands away from the family' and 'the State shouldn't raise the children'. The protest was the biggest so far since the proposal for a change in the law.

Today, according to New Zealand law, parents are allowed to use 'reasonable discipline' when they raise their children That interpretation has according to opponents resulted to parents being accused for beating their children with everything from electrical wire to whips and still being acquitted. Therefore the law needs to be changed.

But the demand for change has met protest with parents, some churches and political organizations. The leader from yesterday's protest, Lindsay Perigo, claims that only a small minority wants to change the law.
- That you oppose such a change of law, doesn't mean you're pro child spanking, Perigo said to AP.
- But it's about that parents should have the right to make that decision.
